The length of an explainer video should absolutely be determined by the content itself, not by some arbitrary rule. If your message requires a deeper dive to fully explain, don’t shortchange it just to fit into a prescribed time slot. At the same time, there’s something to be said for brevity – an engaging video that’s concise and to the point can often deliver more impact.
You're also spot on about people’s attention spans. We consume content in different ways, and as long as the video is engaging, the audience will stick around. If the viewer clicks play, they’re already interested in what you have to say. So, the video should meet those expectations and deliver value without padding it out just for the sake of length.
I think under 3 minutes is a great benchmark – not because it's a rigid rule but because it encourages clear, focused communication. But if your video needs a little more time to properly explain the topic, don’t hesitate to go longer. The key is making sure the viewer feels like the time they spent was worth it.
In short: Make it engaging, make it clear, and make it worth the viewer’s time, regardless of the length!
